Uncanny XMen Vol 4 Kieron Gillen Daniel Acuna Books

Collecting: Uncanny X-Men #15-20

This Uncanny X-Men series concludes with a long crossover that has reshaped the Marvel Universe (for particulars see Avengers vs. X-Men the issues collected here are also collected in the companion volume Avengers vs. X-Men Companion ). While I felt that the crossover ultimately was unsuccessful there are some key events in this graphic novel that will probably be important to future X-Men issues.

First the long brewing final battle with Mr Sinister comes to a Phoenix-powered conclusion. Or does it?

The curse of the juggernaut that inhabits Colossus turns the most kind heart-ed mutant into a raging demon. And things will never be the seem between brother and sister Rasputin.

Finally the Phoenix force is concentrated in Cyclops making him in some ways closer to Jean now than he could ever be when she was alive. Cyclops fights all the X-Men and Avengers with devastating results.

These battles should have provided the 2nd incarnation with an action-packed finale, however the Phoenix battle was largely a recap from the crossover issues. Moreover the X-Men seem to be in shambles. Cyclops is in jail. Wolverine is an Avenger and school teacher. This sorry state of affairs wraps up what used to be the best comic book Marvel produced. But hope is not completely lost X-Fans:

Imprisoned for his crimes against man and mutant-kind, Cyclops represents the new brand of Uncanny X-Men. These X-Men will be dangerous and possibly criminal: "Revolutionaries." While I did not like the AvX business, I am looking forward to the promise of an edgy counter-cultural Uncanny X-Men (see Uncanny X-Men, Vol. 1: Revolution (Uncanny X-Men - Marvel Now) ).

Uncanny XMen Vol 4 Kieron Gillen Daniel Acuna Books Reviews

I think that it's fair to say that if you enjoyed the AVENGERS VS. X-MEN event, you'll probably like this book. It's packed with mediocre art, a lot of tie-ins to the main event, and it successfully rebrands one of Marvel's greatest heroes as its worst enemy since Dr. Doom.

However, the one thing I won't complain about are the ideas at work. We have showdowns with Mr. Sinister that the book has been building to from issue #1, and we have an interesting last few issues; one that takes place at the same time as the events in the infamous AVENGERS VS. X-MEN #11 as Scott and Emma dine mentally while they fight the various forces that have come to stop them, and then a final issue in which Colossus and Magik finally have it out, and Scott finds himself on the opposite side of the glass from Mr. Sinister in a most unusual way.

So the ideas on their own are very nicely placed, but the execution by Gillen and particularly Greg Land is pretty blah. It's such a shame that this event had to happen in order to frame a new argument for the Marvel Universe, because to me, AvX was one of the worst event comics of all time, and despite how shiny of a polish some of the tie-in titles tried to put on this turd, many of the tie-ins suffered as well. The only two books that come to mind as really working despite this event are WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN and NEW AVENGERS.

This final volume of UNCANNY X-MEN, while not being bad, just wasn't that good either.
Great series, excellent read Loved it!
Great product...Highly recommended seller...A+++
NO SPOILERS
Not only am I giving this book a four but I'm also giving a four to the series itself.
Kieron Gillen's run has been stand up amazing !
He's given the best and most varied roster I've seen in years. But also given each character on the team a little side story while his run unfolds.
But enough about the series this book manages (in my unqualified opinion) to actually turn a crossover event side story into something interesting! No only does this story actually have a bit of meaning while the crossover event plays out it actually contributes to the development of characters after the event and this book ends. I can assure you won't be wasting your money on volume that just plods along waiting for the crossover event to finish it takes the event by the horns ( or flaming wings) and makes use of it.
For that I grant this story a four and a hope for the future of crossover event side stories.
I look forward to bendis' uncanny xmen
I really appreciate Gillen's approach to writing the X-Men. His flow is very authentic and true to what one would imagine these characters are experiencing. It was hard to go into Volumes 3 & 4 for me personally because I loathed where we were headed AvX... haven't we done this already? Bringing in the Phoenix and reviving it the way that they did was unique. I was expecting Hope to blast everyone back to the Golden Age, but the Phoenix Five was a nice change of pace. If you're looking for a good fight featuring your favorite Avenger or X-Man, look elsewhere. Of course the end is... well, I don't want to spoil everything, but you probably already know by now that XXXXXX will die by the end of this issue and XXXXXXX will be feeling the consequences of his actions for a long, long time. Kieron has been my favorite writer for the X-Men since Whedon's glorious reign. His take on Sinister is MAD. Perfectly realized his main villain from the very end of Fear Itself to the very end of his run on this limited volume of Uncanny X-Men. Too bad they've ushered Gillen to Tony Stark's relentless Iron Man series in hopes that someone can steer the title in the right direction. Given I've never read any of Gillen's other works and the only Marvel characters I care about are mutants, I will most definitely not be keeping up with that. Gillen's worked on Generation Hope and the much anticipated and anti-climactic AvX Consequences can whet your appetite if you're eager for more Kieron.
