Enchantress from the Stars Sylvia Engdahl Lois Lowry Books
I'm so happy Enchantress from the Stars out in ebook! I just reread it for the first time since high school, many years ago! (Ugh. Can't believe that much time as passed.) Enchantress was a high school favorite of mine, read and reread. I can still remember the blue cover and where it was located in the library--something I can't do for any other book!I'd checked a few times to see if the story was out on Kindle because I mostly buy ebooks. (My thousands of books overflow my library) I was always disappointed not to find the ebook on Amazon. At one time, I thought of writing Sylvia Engdahl to encourage her publisher to publish in ebook format.
So thinking of the story last week, I once again checked on Amazon and there it was! I snapped it up and read it with as much enjoyment as before.
An author's note states that she updated it slightly to change the sexist language of the day, and I'm glad she did. for I'm sure that would have taken away my enjoyment of the story. Now it's a more modern read.

Enchantress from the Stars Sylvia Engdahl Lois Lowry Books Reviews
This is a lovely story, a parable and sci-fi and fantasy all at once, with flawed and interesting characters. It’s at times a bit on the nose, but I understand it’s meant to be accessible to younger readers. I wished I’d read it as a child - I know I would have loved it as much as I loved other classics I’ve since reread like A Wrinkle in Time and Dune.
This isn't a book I would normally read, meaning it's labeled for young readers. A reading list on another site led me to try it. I really love the ethics of the advanced civilization that are depicted in this book, but I did get very tired of the main protagonist making mistake after mistake. I ended up skipping over the parts where those mistakes were rationalized. A masterpiece, no, a good read, yes.
I read this book when it first came out in 1970. I loved it! It is suburb writing. I bought this paperback for my great niece who likes fantasy. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to expand his/her mind about the universe and alien worlds. It is simply wonderful, plausible, and "out of this world"! It is a great read for anyone who enjoys fantasy and science fiction.

This is one of the best young adult books I've read, and although I'm an old guy, I've read a lot of young adult fiction. I keep hoping someone will make this book into a movie --- a movie focusing on the characters and story ... AND avoiding binges of special effects and mysterious plot changes. This edition of the book in hardback is very beautiful as a book above and beyond its beauty as a story.
This is a real good read. The book is an interstellar science fiction book with a female character telling her story. She is part of force of highly specialized people that polices new worlds and tries to promote peace. When a lesser civilization tries to take over an emerging early civilization, she falls in love with a young woodcutter who is being pruned to defeat the invaders on his own. Elana, the heroine, is engaged to member of her force. Elana must work through her feelings of love and duty to the force to make a decision if she is going to reveal her true identity to the young woodcutter to whom she has falling in love. The story revolves around the spirited Elana, a superior intelligent highly advanced civilization, and duty and honor to one's beliefs and homeland.
I read this many decades ago and loved it, and re-reading it was a pleasure. Elana (the protagonist) is engaging and the situations that force her maturation feel right. I've always wondered about the similarity between the rules of engagement for her and the Prime Directive from Star Trek. All in all, it's an excellent story for mature children, teens, and adults who are young at heart, and a great introduction to science fiction for those who haven't jumped into the genre yet.
I read this to help a child with an assignment. Assumed it would be a rather mediocre YA science fiction. But the literature major in me was impressed.
The story is told from 3 perspectives. One is classic fairy tale. One is classic science fiction. And last is . . . advanced science fiction? Space opera? Anyway, the sections alternate and I was impressed with the change in perspective and language. It's not a long book, but fit quite a bit in.
More important, it's a significant commentary on symbolism. While I understand that many people life science fiction for the world-building, I like this particularly because it lacked that. The author even said something to the effect of, "We'll just call it a ray gun. Or a dragon." There's no need to create new words or re-define anything. She used simplicity of language to focus on the real message. Which is....
The real message is . . . growth and maturity, for both individuals and civilizations. Also sacrifice, choices, perceptions, motives, love, success, and letting go. There's a lot going on, but each of the main characters are struggling through their own version of similar issues. Also, there's a deep grasp of the reality that life isn't perfect and that suffering is real. We sometimes see green grass on the other side, but there's suffering and struggle there too. The three perspectives achieved that in a way that is not usually possible.
Overall, not only did I thoroughly enjoy it.... I will probably re-read it in the future. I haven't done that often since I was young, but this one feels worth the re-visit in a few years.
