She Lies in Wait A Novel Gytha Lodge Books
I loved this book. The police procedural elements are meticulously detailed and expertly interwoven to progress the plot, whilst interviews in the present day deftly shape the characters of suspects and detectives alike. I was kept guessing until the end!I’m looking forward to the return of Jonah Sheens and his team – Gytha Lodge is certainly a big new talent in this genre!

She Lies in Wait A Novel Gytha Lodge Books Reviews
This book is Outstanding! So glad I read it.
Book was very descriptive, good character development. It made me think about each character and feel what each was going through on that night
I am sure that most will agree with me, likeable characters and plausible story line. An easy enjoyable read in my opinion.
An excellent, well-crafted mystery.
I tend to lean towards thrillers, only occasionally wandering into pure 'mystery' territory, so perhaps I have not been exposed to a book of this type before. It was not what I expected. Having received it as a pre-release copy and not knowing anything except the title and a couple of sentences about the plot, I expected this to be more of a "cabin in the woods / killer run amuck" thriller.
It is not.
Except for a couple of brief fast-paced sections, this book is every bit as much about the police investigation itself, as it is about the central storyline. It is a nearly endless sequence of scenes in which the constable methodically questions the participants surrounding the murder, each time exposing a little more information - or ambiguity - into the bigger picture. What sets it apart from a typical old-school mystery is that I feel this reflected a real police investigation far better than the typical fictional investigation. Halfway through, I was beginning to question this format, feeling a bit of weariness of the repetitiousness of it, but something grabbed me and I held on until I could not put it down for the last quarter.
As a fledgling mystery-thriller writer myself, I admire and respect how difficult it must have been to logically organize this book and keep everything cohesive. An impressive feat for sure.
So, with the understanding that the middle can feel a bit slow and repetitive, and that it's not the slasher-thriller it may appear to be, I can heartily recommend this book to all lovers of mysteries or police procedurals.
It's not really a complaint, but the only feedback I would have given had I been one of the editors - I wouldn't have made the crime take place so long ago (30 years) -OR- I would have added more story as to how the characters had evolved over so much time. Except for a few brief bits of background information, these characters, for the most-part seemed to behave and exist as if they were still in their late 20's and that only 10 years had passed. It didn't feel like there had been much real character progress and I had to keep reminding myself that these people were now in their late 40's. I couldn't help but wonder if the author kept forgetting that too. Some of the similar-sounding British police lingo (DCI, DCS, CID, CI) took a while for this non-British reader to get used to as well, and there was one recurring trivial character who had no conclusion and served no purpose, but that's all fairly trivial in the grand scheme of things.
While I never felt much of a connection to, and never really liked, any of the characters (despite being the same age), I found them to be well-formed and interesting. I probably liked and empathized with the lead investigator, Jonah's, character the most, perhaps because he had matured the most.
All in all, a well-crafted and captivating story.

Language medium+ (a couple of dozen f-word usages)
Violence light
Sexual Content nothing graphic, but rape was a common subject
Drugs story revolved around a group of teens' drug cache and their youthful experimentation, but nothing graphic.
A young girl’s body is found 30 years after going missing, and a police inspector who knows more than he should about the victim is in charge of the murder inquiry. A lot of characters who have been friends since high school are involved, including the victim’s sister. Interesting enough to finish, but I will not be recommending it to my friends.
I was determined to stick with this story, but it was a struggle. The first two thirds of the book moved along at a glacial pace. It picked up towards the end. I think this is the author's first book so I'm sure she will adjust the pacing in her future works. Severe lack of tension for quite a while before the story played out. I really liked the main character, Jonah, and think he will be good in the planned series. Not so sure about Hanson (his assistant)....a few things were left hanging with her.
"She Lies in Wait," is a fantastic book that I devoured in 6 hours. I waffled back and forth between my guess as to who may have committed the crime, who had the motive, who could have lived with themselves for thirty years, and I still hadn't made a decisive guess until near the end! Gytha writes each character with enough depth to be considered a viable suspect, which means no one is off the suspect list with any certainty! The story has an easy to follow transition between past and present, provides a voice to the victim, as well as the suspects, and masterfully intertwines their individual stories. The police squad members (Americans may want to brush up on the DCI, constable terminology first) have their own idiosyncrasies that play into the mystery and make the reading even more enjoyable. As an Anglophile, I thoroughly enjoyed the British setting and nuances. It is a wonderful "whodunit" and I cannot wait to read what comes next and see which characters return in this series!
I loved this book. The police procedural elements are meticulously detailed and expertly interwoven to progress the plot, whilst interviews in the present day deftly shape the characters of suspects and detectives alike. I was kept guessing until the end!
