The healing power of music and how one decent person can impact the lives of those she touches is at the core of writer Kathy Lynn Harris' "A Good Kind of Knowing." Set in a small town, this is not a fictional Mayberry depiction of all those good folk living in harmony. Harris doesn't shy away from many of the ugly realities of small-town life, just as she unflinchingly depicts the cruel authenticity of the effects of disease on relationships. Yet the novel doesn't wallow in darkness; it's leavened with humor and touches of grace. Sera Taylor, who runs a small music store in the Texas town of Lakeville, is surrounded by a wonderful cast of characters -- funny, exasperating, maddening, flawed -- who ring true. These are people you will like getting to know. Put on some good music, and open this one up.Tags : A Good Kind of Knowing - Kindle edition by Kathy Lynn Harris. A Good Kind of Knowing edition by Kathy Lynn Harris Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
What an amazing second novel for Kathy Lynn Harris! While the subject matter is different from her first novel, once again I was hooked from page one!! Fantastic characters! Wonderful imagery! I could feel the Texas summer heat...I could hear the country music. If you liked her first novel, Blue Straggler, you will most certainly enjoy this one.
I loved this book and couldn't put it down. I cared for the characters and couldn't wait to see what happened next. My heart hurt for some of them, and I wanted to smack a few of the rest! If you grew up in a little Texas town like I did, you will recognize these folks. If you weren't lucky enough to grow up in a little Texas town, read this and you'll get a very good idea of what it was like.
Kathy L. Harris has written a very different type of book from her first one. She was strong to take on the subject of cancer and dying in the first place, and I'm happy to report that, in the second place, she manages to carry this load well. You come to care about the important characters in this book, and the last third of it has an elegiac tone that shows the author is wise beyond her years. Highly recommended.
It was more into pancreatic cancer than I cared for. I enjoyed the back story, just wanted less tragedy and more story.
Once again Kathy Lynn Harris' story telling captures the true essence of all of the characters in bringing us into Sera's life journey. Sera showed us how to be truly authentic and love herself without judgement. She was thriving in living her life - not just surviving. Her examples to others in this beautiful story of our circle of life included; when sad show happiness, when someone displays hatred to others show how to love them, and when faced with a life threatening disease - choose to live in the present and not be influenced by others - not being dragged into their drama on how we should do it - they have it harder facing our choice and approach toward our decisions.
Great insights into each of the characters on how a single person (Sera) can have a positive impact on their life.
Sera was true to herself and lived life to the fullest.
To quote a lyric from OL' Blue Eyes' "My Way" (Frank Sinatra) - Sera did in fact "Oh, no, oh, no, not me, I did it my way".
Sometimes you want a book that churns along. Other times you just want an easy, good, character-rich read. This book filled that latter bill. Protagonist Sera comes across as living, breathing person we'd probably all be the better for knowing. Even if I never meet someone of her ilk in my life, Harris convinced me that, indeed, this kind of grounded, non judgmental person does exist for those lucky enough to know one when they see one. Lucky Kathy Lynn Harris.
One of my greatest complaints about books is that I often figure out the ending early on, and then still have to read the rest of it. Just as she did in "Blue Straggler," Kathy Lynn Harris manages to write my favorite sort of book - one that kept me interested and guessing (incorrectly) throughout the entire time I'm reading, then leaves me wanting more. It's not fair to compare "A Good Kind of Knowing" to "Blue Straggler" as they are very different books. I enjoyed both but found that this latest offering moved me on a much deeper level.
As a native Texan, I enjoy reading about my home state, its people and places, quirks and all. Kathy completely nails the personalities and the vibe in a small Texas town, but she goes a step further and makes the reader actually care about these people. She shows us her characters at their worst, and still makes us believe in the best they have inside them. The avid music fan in me loved all the musical references (it's set in an old-school record store, as in music on vinyl) and the ways music connected such a disparate group of people, each of whom loved the main character in their own deep and unique way.
I teach adult ESL/literacy classes and am always on the lookout for things I can read to my class that are above their reading level (3rd-4th grade) but something that will inspire or delight them. There are so many passages in this book that I can use in class, and it will be fun to share snapshots of my Texas culture with my students who are from Mexico, Sudan, Yugoslavia, Korea and Nigeria. Also, teaching from this book will give me an excuse to re-read it, as it is one of the best books I've read so far this year, and I'm averaging two to three per week. I'll be anxiously waiting for the next novel from this very talented Texas writer, and keeping up with her blog in the meantime.
